Arts & Culture Benchmark

The League’s partnership with the TRG Arts & Culture Benchmark provides access to the latest orchestra patron data, including ticket sales and revenues; donation units and revenues; and patron demographics. More than 40 participating orchestras also receive real-time access to an interactive dashboard for analyzing and patron trends. Read the latest findings and learn more below.

League Insights: January 2025 Edition

These aggregated findings provide an indicative overview of patron behavior during the period January 2024 to December 2025, based on data from 47 medium and larger budget League member orchestras.

Latest Available Ticket Buyer Demographics (update scheduled for Summer 2025)
  1. There has been a notable increase in the percentage of tickets bought by younger patrons in recent years. From 2019 to 2023, the proportion of tickets purchased by Millennial buyers surged from 9% to 25%, while those purchased by Gen X rose from 20% to 31%, nearly matching the percentage bought by Boomers.
  2. The proportion of tickets sold to Asian, Black, and Latino audience members increased only slightly between calendar years 2019 and 2023.
Holiday Season Sales and Revenue
  1. A late Thanksgiving in 2024 led to a decrease in the number of Holiday performances programmed across the performing arts sector.  On average, orchestra performances were 8% down in comparison to 2023.
  2. Despite offering fewer Holiday performances than in 2023, orchestras experienced a 9% average increase in ticket units sold and a 19% average rise in revenue per performance (or 16% when adjusted for inflation).
  3. Orchestra ticket buyers spent an average of 9% more per Holiday concert ticket in 2024 than in 2023, reflecting the continued post-pandemic trend of increasing per capita spending.
2024 Sales and Revenue
  1. In 2024, ticket revenue rose significantly above pre-pandemic levels, continuing the momentum gained throughout 2023.
  2. Subscription and membership revenue increased across the performing arts sector, but the growth was more pronounced for orchestras than for other art forms.
  3. Specifically, orchestra subscription and membership revenue increased by 41% from 2019 to 2024 (or 15% when adjusted for inflation).
  4. This increase can be partly attributed to a 28% rise in per unit, per capita spending. Additional contributing factors could include new orchestra membership programs and other bundled ticket products being introduced to the marketplace.
  5. Single ticket revenue was 25% higher in 2024 than in 2019, despite a slight (1%) decline in units sold (or 2% when adjusted for inflation). This trend aligned broadly with patterns observed across the wider performing arts sector.
Individual Giving
  1. Between 2019 and 2024, revenue from individual donations fell by 12% (or 28% when adjusted for inflation). At the same time, the total number of gifts increased by 18%, indicating a broadening base of support for orchestras’ work but a concerning decline in average gift size.
  2. Average gift size is affected by demographic change. Between 2019 and 2023, the share of gifts from Gen X patrons grew from 21% to 25%, while those from Millennials increased from 9% to 14%. While this generational shift is promising, it has not fully offset the decline in income from larger gifts previously made by Silent Generation donors aged 79 and above.

Within this national picture, every individual orchestra has its own unique story to tell.  Revenue is only part of an organization’s financial landscape: for many orchestras, recent revenue increases do not compensate for inflation and other expense increases.
