Differing Abilities
Being an inclusive organization includes finding ways to serve audiences of differing abilities. Many orchestras are exploring ways to provide sensory-friendly concerts, neuro-diverse programming, and performances that address physical challenges such as visual and hearing impairments.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee of the League’s Board of Directors
The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee of the League of American Orchestras Board of Directors is a dedicated and highly engaged group of board members who meet on a quarterly basis to discuss directions and areas of focus for the League’s EDI work. The committee focuses on implementing inclusive best practices within the League Board.

Staff Diversity
Following a decade of moderate growth overall and a strong increase in Black representation during the pandemic years, BIPOC representation reached 23.3% in 2024. In common with other performing arts sectors, women’s representation was higher than men’s throughout the decade, while non-binary representation notably increased.

Music Director Diversity
In 2024, 86.3% of music directors were male, and 75.9% were White. Only modest overall progress was made during the decade 2014-2024: Black representation decreased, as did the representation of women music directors in larger budget orchestras.
