Orchestra Demographics Survey
Related LinksAll member orchestras have the opportunity to take part in the League’s annual Orchestra Demographics Survey.
Each participating orchestra receives a Benchmarking Report. This report allows participating orchestras to compare racial/ethnic and gender diversity within their own musicians, staff, conductors and board members, with averages for their budget group peers.
By taking part in the survey, member orchestras also contribute to the League’s important, ongoing efforts to report on racial/ethnic and gender diversity trends in the orchestra field.
To take part, be on the lookout for survey launch emails early in the new year. The Orchestra Demographics Survey opens every January, accepting submissions until February. Participants can expect to access budget group reports in March.

How to Participate
Participating orchestras have two options for gathering the data needed for the survey:
- Consult Existing HR Records: Utilize your orchestra’s current HR records to extract the required information.
- Gather New, Self-Reported Data: Encouraging individuals to self-report respects their rights to express their own racial/ethnic and gender identities. This approach also enhances data accuracy. To help, we provide a user-friendly survey template (PDF) with ready-made questions that can be easily integrated into any survey platform. Additionally, explanatory text is available for your staff, musicians, conductors and board members. Access the survey template (PDF) for a smooth and efficient data collection process.
