This January, join us at Midwinter Managers Meeting in Detroit for two intensive days of strategic conversation, peer networking, and professional development tailored for your budget group. Connect with colleagues who understand your unique priorities and goals and leave energized and refueled for the year ahead.
At the General Session, you’ll hear from Faye Alexander Nelson, board chair of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, on civic engagement and public value. More details to come!
Midwinter is open to executive directors and youth orchestra administrators from League member orchestras. It will take place January 24-25, 2027 at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Detroit Downtown, with sessions running Sunday through Monday. On Sunday, January 24, Alan Brown will also host an exclusive breakfast at the Motown Mansion for Midwinter attendees who arrive early. You can RSVP for the breakfast as part of registering for Midwinter.

On a flexible schedule? SphinxConnect, the Sphinx Organization’s annual convening dedicated to inclusion in classical music, takes place right before Midwinter Managers Meeting on January 21-23, 2027 at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center.

Who Should Attend?
Executive directors and youth orchestra lead administrators (executive directors, lead staff,* and/or lead artistic directors) from League member orchestras of all budget sizes.
*For youth orchestras that are part of a professional orchestra, lead staff titles may vary (ex. Manager of Youth Ensembles, Director of Education, etc.). Not sure if you qualify? Email member@americanorchestras.org.

Breakfast at the Motown Mansion

On Sunday, January 24, join other early arriving attendees for breakfast at the Motown Mansion, hosted by Alan Brown. Select this option at registration to RSVP!
The Motown Mansion, also known as the Michelson-Young Estate, is the former home of Berry Gordy, Jr. Built in 1917 by lumber magnate Nels Michelson and substantially renovated in 1926-27 by automotive manufacturing supplier L. A. Young, the home is one of the grandest estates in the Boston Edison Historic District. Alan Brown purchased the property in 2017.
The home is exquisitely outfitted in Italian neo-classical style with ornate wrought iron, decorative plaster work, and stone detail. The property consists of three structures: the main house, at 10,500 sq. ft., has 10 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, a marble ballroom, an English Pub, and a solarium; the athletic house, which houses an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a bowling alley and a billiards room; and, a five-car garage featuring a two-bedroom carriage house apartment. Underground tunnels connect the main house with the other buildings.

Event Participation Agreement and Health Protocols
By registering for and attending Midwinter Managers Meeting, you agree to the League’s event participation agreement and antitrust policy (PDF). This includes acknowledging and understanding all risks associated per the League’s liability waiver.
While masking is not required, all League events are mask-friendly, and we encourage participants to wear masks as they see fit. In keeping with the League’s event participation agreement, we ask that all participants respect one another’s choices.
