Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the League report on demographic trends in the orchestra field?

Regardless of our varying personal experiences and perspectives, most of us share a vision for a country where everyone, no matter their background, has a fair chance at success. We also recognize that when people from diverse backgrounds work together our organizations thrive, and our art form becomes richer and more vibrant.

Since 2016, the League has been tracking racial, ethnic, and gender metrics to understand where progress towards racial/ethnic and gender diversity is happening—and where it is not. Through its collective efforts, the orchestra field diversified its repertoire in the post-pandemic years and has made sustained improvements to the diversity of its conductors. However, significant gaps remain in many other orchestra roles, and particularly within larger budget organizations.

Ongoing tracking is essential as we strive to build an orchestra field that is fair, accessible, and welcoming to all.

How was this data analyzed?

The data presented here updates the analysis conducted for the League’s 2023 report Racial/Ethnic and Gender Diversity in the Orchestra Field 2023.  Definitions and technical notes concerning sample size and representativeness, can be found in the report.

How important are diversity metrics in measuring change?

Diversity of representation is a key measure of progress towards a field that is fair and accessible to all, and that benefits from the talents of people from all backgrounds.

However, true progress cannot be achieved or sustained without an inclusive organizational culture. Inclusion and belonging metrics are just as essential as demographic data in identifying where meaningful change is happening—and where challenges remain.

What are orchestras doing to improve diversity of representation?

In recent years, orchestras have significantly increased their investment in equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. Many have strengthened internal capacity through the League’s Catalyst Fund and are advancing musician diversity through its Inclusive Stages program.

The League’s 2023 report on Racial/Ethnic and Gender Diversity in the Orchestra Field includes an appendix highlighting key initiatives, while the Promising Practices guide showcases orchestras that are building strong internal foundations for long-term diversification efforts.
