The processes for people of color to gain permanent employment in American orchestras are not equitable. Exclusion, harassment, and the lack of access to education, mentorship, and networking opportunities have all impeded their participation in the orchestral field. These discriminatory practices have barricaded the door to Black and Brown colleagues for the past century.

Conference 2021: Creating Pathways for Meaningful Action in the Face of Racial Injustice
In the face of persistent racism and violence stemming from rampant anti-Asian and anti-Blackness, it can be easy to lose our way in creating pathways for meaningful action and community accountability. For those of us who have been engaged in this work for a long time and for those of us who are just beginning, the idea of falling short of our vision for a more just and inclusive field can be immobilizing. Without processes for tangible forward movement, it can be easy to become discouraged.

Top Executive Diversity
From a low starting point, BIPOC representation among top executives increased three-fold between 2014 and 2024. Women and non-binary individuals’ representation almost mirrored the U.S. population throughout the decade, but was highest within smaller to medium budget organizations.
