House Amendment Would Reduce NEA Funding by 25%
July 19, 2024
After swift subcommittee and committee passage, the full House of Representatives is expected to consider Interior funding next week, which includes the annual budget for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Interior Subcommittee Chair Mike Simpson (R-ID) has already recommended each Endowment receive $203.895M, a slight reduction from their current level. Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) has proposed an amendment to reduce this funding even more – suggesting a 25% cut to the NEA to its FY19 level of $155 million. His proposal for the NEH would reduce its funding to $150 million.
Advocates are urged to contact their Representative to oppose these amendments. The NEA’s funding not only supports direct and indirect grants to every Congressional district, it also provides vital research and initiatives to deepen public engagement and participation in the arts.
Our customizable NEA e-campaign quickly routes your message straight to your Representative. Weigh in early and often, and remind policymakers how important the arts are to your community. Thank you!
