Sexual Harassment Prevention

The League of American Orchestras encourages its members to follow best practices in preventing sexual harassment and in responding to claims. Toward this end, below are some resources.

Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

This is a good place to start—it’s a short overview from a very well respected legal publisher, Nolo.

What Works to Prevent Harassment

An article from the New York Times on evidence-based methods for preventing sexual harassment. Despite its title, the article does recommend training, but training executed in certain ways.

Promising Practices for Preventing Harassment

This is a comprehensive set of guidelines from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The Board’s Role

It’s Time for Nonprofit Boards to Have a Conversation about Sexual Misconduct (PDF) is an article by BoardSource President and CEO Anne Wallestad. It was originally published by Nonprofit Quarterly online on February 22, 2018, and was reprinted in Symphony magazine with permission.

Resources from the Society for Human Resource Management

This highly regarded association has dozens of resources on sexual harassment prevention, including training, policies, and investigation protocols. Some are free to non-members, but many require membership. The $199 membership fee could provide a great return on investment given the wealth of resources offered here, not only on sexual harassment but hundreds of other topics.  Membership includes the ability to consult an HR advisor with specific questions, which the association says many members believe is alone worth the cost of membership. Find information on benefits here and information on joining here.

Discussion Group on League 360

There is a discussion group on the League’s online platform for EDs, HR personnel, and finance staff in which participants share questions, ideas, and resources.

The Hub – the League’s News Aggregator

Find articles on sexual harassment in the classical music world through the League’s online news aggregator, The Hub.
