Location: Center for Black Music Research, 618 S. Michigan Ave., Sixth Floor

This session is limited to a maximum of 20 participants. If you wish to attend, please RSVP here.

Podcasting at the Intersection of Opera, Race, and Social Justice

Session Date Start Time End Time
Friday, June 15, 2018 8:45 am 10:00 am

Location: Salon 1, Third Floor

Special Invitation to Conference Attendees: Through a collaboration of the Glimmerglass Festival and the WFMT Radio Network, a new, short-run, five-episode podcast called Breaking Glass will release in August 2018. Supported by an Opera America Innovation Grant, Breaking Glass aims to explore social justice through the lens of opera, from its white, Western European origins, and to explore the ways it can transform perceptions and spark conversations about social change in contemporary society. Two veteran creators and storytellers for the stage, Paige Hernandez and Tazewell Thompson, lead the podcast, discussing, questioning, and challenging what stories are told in the world of opera and how, why, where and when they are told, engaging creatives from the opera community and drawing from their own experiences as multi-faceted artists of color in a dialogue rich in humanity, spirit, and honesty. In this public forum, the creators of the podcast will address their process and the challenges of podcasting in the classical music space, embracing a socially-driven rather than PR-minded media project, and the takeaways for other organizations curious about starting their own podcasts. Presented by Glimmerglass Festival and the WFMT Radio Network.

Speakers: Paige Hernandez, host, Breaking Glass; Tony Macaluso, co-executive director, Breaking Glass; Heather McDougall, project manager, Breaking Glass; Chris Powell, co-executive director, Breaking Glass; and Tazewell Thompson, regular contributor, Breaking Glass
