Cultural Diplomacy Opportunity: Musicians May Apply Now
Orchestra musicians interested in participating in international cultural diplomacy should take note of two application deadlines at the U.S. Department of State. The 2016-2017 season of American Music Abroad is currently accepting applications until January 24, 2016. Applicants should demonstrate artistic integrity, musical ability, knowledge of music in American history and culture, Music Business strategies and a strong commitment to community and education programming. Groups of 3-5 are encouraged to apply.
Another opportunity is to apply for OneBeat 2016, which is accepting applications from January 4-February 5, 2016. OneBeat returns for its fifth year, convening innovative musicians from every region of the world in the U.S. for an exhilarating month of performances, discussions, interactive music-making events, and more. Silk Road Grant Seeking RFPs for South Central Asia
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has just announced a new Request for Proposals (RFP) with a very quickly-approaching deadline of August 16th. Proposals should highlight the relationship between any combination of two or more of the following nations: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, or Uzbekistan. This competition is designed to use people-to-people activities that advance the vision of a New Silk Road connecting Afghanistan to its neighbors through networks of trade, transit and people, or expand regional connectivity along the Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor.
Each proposal must specifically respond to one priority theme: cultural heritage and understanding; access to education; journalistic ties & regional reporting; or cross-border networks and problem solving. Congress Approves FY09 Increase for Educational Cultural Exchange Programs
The Educational and Cultural Exchange programs of the U.S. State Department received $538 million for FY09. While it is not clear how much of this funding might be dedicated to the grant program that supports international cultural exchanges, this represents an overall increase for the program. The League will be in touch as opportunities may arise for orchestras to apply for open competitions.

Cultural Exchange Funds Available
The Educational and Cultural Exchange programs of the U.S. State Department received a $59 million increase for FY08. While it is not clear how much of this funding might be dedicated to the grant program that supports international cultural exchanges, orchestras should take note of a current grant opportunity. The State Department is inviting grant proposals for programs that support international exchanges and build relationships between U.S. nonprofit organizations and cultural groups abroad. Eligible programs will support exchanges with Africa, East Asia, Europe, the Near East, North Africa, South Central Asia and the Western Hemisphere. The application process is highly competitive, and focuses on projects that encourage citizen engagement in current issues, focus particularly on youth, and promote the development of democratic societies and institutions. Applications are due February 15, 2008.
