The League has put together a list of more than 30 job descriptions listing the major areas of responsibility within orchestra administration and staff titles.
Depending on the size of the orchestra, individual job titles may vary and often individuals will have more than one area of responsibility. For example, in a large budget orchestra with a large staff, you may have vice-presidents, directors, managers, and assistants (see Chart 1) with very specific responsibilities. In contrast, a mid-to-small budget orchestra will have fewer staff and often one person will wear multiple hats, for example being in charge of both the marketing and communications or the development and marketing for the orchestra. (See Chart 2 and Chart 3)
In conjunction with the Job Descriptions, there are dozens of Career Profiles of orchestra staff from around the country where you can read an individual's career profile, educational preparation, and learn about their experience working for an orchestra.
