Building career awareness ideas for Pre-College students

  • Create an Orchestra Career Day
Learn about the career opportunities working for an orchestra. Invite local area youth orchestras, community music school students and parents. Offer panel to discuss different positions and responsibilities within the orchestra, their career path including college training and other experience. Offer to meet/interview participants and offer career guidance/next steps. Provide information and suggestions for internship and volunteer opportunities during college, summer sessions.
  • Behind the Scenes of Today’s Concert
As add-on to youth concert, create a pre- or post- concert panel to discuss the work that goes into bringing about the concert, including e.g., artistic planning, operations, development, marketing, PR, etc. Provide handout with job descriptions, opportunities to volunteer, internships.
  • Career Series for Youth Orchestras
At rehearsal breaks, or following rehearsal, offer Career Series that over the course of year would include speakers covering all aspects of working for an orchestra. Provide job description, college training, work experience. Or, “Career Tales from the Front” – a panel or discussion about how others have made their career decisions and ended up where they did. Panelists would represent various stages in the career path (i.e., college student deciding where to go, recent grad in first job, mid-career, supervisor etc.)
