Postal Service Proposes Rate Increase (July 6, 2010)
Washington, D.C. - Today the Postal Service announced proposed price increases averaging about 5 percent, covering a variety of services, such as first class, advertising mail, and periodicals.
The independent Postal Rate Commission has 90 days to respond and if they approve the increase, new rates will take effect January 2, 2011. Under the law, the post office is generally limited to increases no more than the rate of inflation -- 0.9 percent for the year ended in May. However, the agency is allowed to seek a larger increase in unusual circumstances.
